Event Details
This month we will be serving at Denver Rescue Mission (DRM), one of our local service partners. During the year, the Denver Rescue Mission provides shelter, food, clothing, education, Christian teaching, and work discipline to meet individuals at their physical and spiritual points of need. We will be volunteering at DRM's Lawrence Street facility. Lawrence Street, DRM's flagship facility, is a men's shelter with 200 overnight beds, and an outreach location offering meals, clothing, free health care, and Client Services. On Sunday, May 9th from 4:30-6:00pm we will be preparing, and possibly serving, a meal.
Please
arrive promptly at the start time indicated above. No need to arrive
more than 10 minutes before your scheduled shift. While you are serving
with us, please remember that you are welcome to eat the dinner meal at
5:00 pm with our staff and residents.
For
health and safety reasons we require all kitchen volunteers to wear
closed-toe shoes, long pants and shirts with sleeves. We invite you to
dress comfortably and respectfully. The following are not allowed: shorts, open-toed shoes or flip flops, tank
tops, midriff tops, or any clothing that is tight, low-cut, or has lewd
or indecent imprints on it. Anyone not meeting these standards may be
asked to leave or may be taken to our clothing room and given
appropriate clothing.
The
parking lot across from the Mission is privately owned and the Denver
Rescue Mission does not control prices there or reimburse volunteers if
they receive a parking ticket. If you choose to park in this lot please remember that you must pay the amount designated on the parking lot sign. When there is a Rockies game this price may increase. There is also on street metered parking available on Lawrence Street.
Enter
the Mission through the door on Lawrence Street. The door is kept
locked. Ring the doorbell on the left, and someone will let you in. A
representative from your group will need to sign in the group at the
front desk. There will be a Volunteer Sign-In sheet that should have
your name printed on it. Please be sure to indicate both your start and
finish time. When you leave if you would like a resident from the
Mission to walk you to your car, please do not hesitate to ask for an
escort.

Volunteer Guidelines
To
help make your volunteer experience as fun and trouble-free as
possible, we have a few important guidelines to acquaint you with:
Be punctual and conscientious. Please arrive no later than your designated time. If
you are unable to fulfill your volunteer commitment, notify the
Volunteer Department of the Denver Rescue Mission at least 24 hours in
advance.
- Sign-in and out of each scheduled volunteer activity. If you are with a group, a representative of the group should sign the group in and out.
- Most of our guests enjoy talking with visitors, but remember they want to be treated just as you would, with dignity and respect.
- Be wise! We want you to get to know our residents and guests; however, be aware of being too gullible. Many times, people who are so disadvantaged have learned to survive by becoming adept at using others. Therefore:
- Work in groups of 2 or 3. Do not let yourself be singled out or cornered.
- Do not give money to anyone.
- Do not give rides to anyone.
- Do not take anyone home with you.
- Do not give out personal information, such as telephone numbers or addresses.
- Do not give anyone your full name.
- Do not leave personal belongings unattended.
- Do not make decisions for the residents. Refer residents and transients to the staff for questions outside your specific area of service.
- All persons under the age of 18 must be with an adult supervisor. Anyone under the age of 18 found without an adult will be asked to leave.
- Report any inappropriate behavior, or anything that makes you uncomfortable, immediately to a staff member.
- Keep all information that is obtained directly or indirectly concerning clients and staff absolutely confidential.
- Dress in a manner that is modest and appropriate. DO NOT wear tank tops, midriff tops, or any clothing that is tight, low-cut, or has lewd or indecent imprints on it. Please DO NOT wear shorts or open toed shoes. Anyone not meeting these standards will be taken to our clothing room and given appropriate clothing.
- If you are interested in keeping in contact with a resident of the Denver Rescue Mission, please make arrangements to do so through Denver Rescue Mission staff.
- Lastly, the Denver Rescue Mission staff is here to insure that you have a safe and enjoyable experience. Therefore, if you are asked to do, or not to do something, please be respectful of staff requests. As well, if you have any questions, just ask
These
guidelines are for your protection and are intended to help you make
wise decisions about your involvement with the people we serve. We are
here to provide the poor and homeless with physical necessities as well
as help our neighbors physically, spiritually, emotionally and
educationally. We thank you for your contribution to this effort.
